AI image detector by file format
AVIF AI image detector: provenance in ISO boxes
AVIF is an ISO base media (HEIF) container that carries EXIF and XMP as metadata items and C2PA manifests in a JUMBF box, and isGenAI’s AI image detector and C2PA checker accept AVIF and read the signed record, the IPTC source type and AI statements from it.

AVIF wraps AV1-coded images in the HEIF structure: an ftyp box declaring the brand, a meta box listing items, and mdat boxes holding data. EXIF and XMP are stored as items linked to the primary image. The C2PA specification defines how the manifest store sits in a JUMBF box inside this container, the same mechanism HEIC uses.
Because items are referenced rather than inline, a careless re-encode drops them completely.
What isGenAI reads from an AVIF
The AI image detector accepts AVIF up to 20 MiB: it validates the C2PA manifest, reads the IPTC DigitalSourceType from XMP, quotes AI statements in metadata, computes the hash and perceptual fingerprint and reports matching copies. The C2PA checker also accepts AVIF. Saved generation prompts are not expected in AVIF, since the A1111, ComfyUI and InvokeAI formats are PNG and EXIF based.
The browser EXIF viewer and the metadata remover do not accept AVIF; use the detector’s report for the fields, or convert a copy.
Converting AVIF
The image converter opens any still image your browser decodes, including AVIF in current browsers, and writes a new PNG, JPEG or WebP without metadata. Convert a copy for sharing and keep the AVIF for evidence. The image pixel compare tool confirms that a converted copy still shows the same pixels.
Lossless AVIF exists but is rare; assume a converted copy is a re-encode.
How to check a file in this format
- Keep the original bytes. Do not open and re-save the file in an editor before checking it.
- Use the tool that accepts the format: the AI image detector for PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF; the C2PA checker for those plus HEIC, PDF, MP4 and MOV.
- Read each finding with its source field. The report names the container record it came from.
- If you must convert, convert a copy and compare both files with the image metadata compare tool so you know what the conversion dropped.
Frequently asked questions
Does isGenAI accept AVIF?
Yes. The AI image detector and the C2PA checker accept AVIF up to 20 MiB and read the signed manifest, IPTC source type and AI statements.
Can an AVIF carry C2PA Content Credentials?
Yes. The C2PA specification covers HEIF-family containers including AVIF through a JUMBF box.
Can the EXIF viewer read AVIF?
No. The browser EXIF viewer reads JPEG, PNG, WebP and classic TIFF. Upload the AVIF to the AI image detector for its readable fields.
Does converting AVIF to PNG keep metadata?
No. The converter writes a fresh file without EXIF, XMP or C2PA. Keep the original AVIF for checking.
