AI image detector by file format

AI image detector by file format

Provenance lives in containers: PNG text chunks, JPEG APP segments, WebP RIFF chunks, ISO boxes in AVIF, HEIC and MP4. Each format page says what the container can hold, what isGenAI reads from it and how to convert without losing the evidence you still need.

Content Credentials found

A signed manifest describes how the file was made.

Signer, recording tool, actions and the signature check result are reported separately, so you can weigh each one.

Choose the format

PNG

Check a PNG for AI evidence. PNG carries saved prompts in tEXt/iTXt chunks, EXIF in eXIf, XMP and C2PA. isGenAI reads all of them from the original file.

JPEG

Check a JPEG for AI evidence. JPEG stores EXIF and XMP in APP1, IPTC in APP13 and C2PA in APP11 JUMBF.

WebP

Check a WebP for AI evidence. WebP keeps EXIF and XMP in RIFF chunks and C2PA in a C2PA chunk. ChatGPT exports WebP with credentials; isGenAI reads them.

AVIF

Check an AVIF for AI evidence. AVIF stores EXIF and XMP as items and C2PA in a JUMBF box. isGenAI’s detector and C2PA checker accept AVIF.

HEIC

Check a HEIC photo for Content Credentials in the isGenAI C2PA checker, convert it to JPG or PNG in your browser, and see what conversion drops.

TIFF

Check a TIFF for AI evidence. TIFF carries EXIF, XMP and IPTC as tags and C2PA in a dedicated tag. isGenAI accepts classic single-page TIFF up to 20 MiB.

GIF

Check an AI GIF. GIF has no EXIF and only an optional XMP extension, and isGenAI’s tools do not accept GIF. Learn what survives and how to check a frame.

BMP

Check a BMP for AI origin. BMP has no EXIF, XMP or C2PA container and is not accepted by isGenAI.

SVG

Check an AI-generated SVG. SVG can hold RDF/XMP metadata in XML and the C2PA spec allows a manifest, but isGenAI’s tools read raster formats.

PDF

Check a PDF for C2PA Content Credentials with the isGenAI C2PA checker, and learn how to check the AI images embedded inside the document.

MP4

Check an MP4 for AI evidence: validate its C2PA manifest, read the container headers and extract frames for image checks. Free isGenAI tools.

MOV

Check a MOV for AI evidence. QuickTime MOV can carry a C2PA manifest and header dates; isGenAI’s C2PA checker and video metadata viewer accept MOV.

WebM

Check a WebM for AI evidence. isGenAI’s C2PA checker does not read WebM; extract frames in your browser and check them as images instead.

How to check a file in this format

  1. Keep the original bytes. Do not open and re-save the file in an editor before checking it.
  2. Use the tool that accepts the format: the AI image detector for PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF; the C2PA checker for those plus HEIC, PDF, MP4 and MOV.
  3. Read each finding with its source field. The report names the container record it came from.
  4. If you must convert, convert a copy and compare both files with the image metadata compare tool so you know what the conversion dropped.
