AI image detector by file format
BMP AI image check: a container without provenance
BMP stores raw pixels with a short header and defines no field for EXIF, XMP, IPTC or C2PA, so a BMP can never carry AI provenance; convert a copy to PNG and use isGenAI’s matching-copy and pixel checks instead.

The file labels itself as AI-made.
IPTC DigitalSourceType such as trainedAlgorithmicMedia is read from XMP and shown with its exact value.
Check an image →What a BMP cannot hold
The Windows bitmap format consists of a file header, an info header, an optional palette and the pixel array. There is no standard slot for Exif, XMP, IPTC or a JUMBF manifest, and the C2PA specification does not define BMP embedding. Any AI tool that exported BMP discarded whatever records it had.
That makes BMP a clean room: nothing inside the file can tell you where it came from.
What you can still check
Convert a copy to PNG with the image converter and upload it to the AI image detector. The report will show no file records, as expected, but it computes a hash and a perceptual fingerprint and reports any matching copy already in isGenAI’s records. The image SHA-256 checksum tool gives you a fingerprint for the BMP itself to compare downloads.
The image pixel compare tool proves whether the BMP matches another copy pixel for pixel.
Advice
Ask where the BMP came from. A screenshot utility, a game capture or a conversion step explains the format, and the earlier file in that chain is the one with records. The image copy versus export guide shows how to compare copies.
Do not read anything into a BMP’s absence of metadata; the format cannot hold any.
How to check a file in this format
- Keep the original bytes. Do not open and re-save the file in an editor before checking it.
- Use the tool that accepts the format: the AI image detector for PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF; the C2PA checker for those plus HEIC, PDF, MP4 and MOV.
- Read each finding with its source field. The report names the container record it came from.
- If you must convert, convert a copy and compare both files with the image metadata compare tool so you know what the conversion dropped.
Frequently asked questions
Does isGenAI accept BMP?
No. Convert a copy to PNG with the image converter and upload that for the matching-copy check; expect no file records.
Can a BMP carry EXIF or Content Credentials?
No. BMP defines no metadata container, and the C2PA specification does not cover it.
Can I tell if a BMP is AI-generated?
Not from the file. Trace its source and check the earlier file; isGenAI does not infer origin from pixels.
What is the fastest check for a BMP?
Compute its SHA-256 with the checksum tool and compare copies, or convert to PNG and run the matching-copy check.
