AI image detector by file format

MP4 AI video check: the records a container can carry

MP4 can carry a C2PA manifest in a top-level uuid box plus creation dates and track details in its movie headers, and isGenAI validates the manifest in the C2PA checker, reads the headers in the video metadata viewer and lets you extract frames for image checks.

Content Credentials found

A signed manifest describes how the file was made.

Signer, recording tool, actions and the signature check result are reported separately, so you can weigh each one.

Where MP4 keeps provenance

MP4 is an ISO base media file: ftyp, moov with movie and track headers, and mdat with the samples. The C2PA specification places the manifest store in a uuid box at the top level, which is how Sora and other signing tools attach credentials to video. The movie and media headers carry creation and modification times as raw seconds since 1904, which many encoders leave at zero.

None of this survives a screen recording, and most social platforms re-encode uploads.

What isGenAI reads from an MP4

The C2PA checker accepts MP4 and validates the manifest, separating signature validity from signer trust. The video metadata viewer inspects up to 512 MiB in your browser: major brand, compatible brands, tracks, timescales, durations and the raw header dates, without decoding video or authenticating anything. The video frame extractor pulls stills from an MP4 up to 200 MiB and ten minutes; each still is a new PNG whose fingerprint can be matched by the AI image detector.

The AI image detector itself accepts images only.

Advice

Get the original export, not a platform download. If the file was reposted, note the platform’s label and trace the first upload. Compare an extracted frame to a known original with the image pixel compare tool.

The Sora and Runway pages explain which video vendors document credentials.

How to check a file in this format

  1. Keep the original bytes. Do not open and re-save the file in an editor before checking it.
  2. Use the tool that accepts the format: the AI image detector for PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF; the C2PA checker for those plus HEIC, PDF, MP4 and MOV.
  3. Read each finding with its source field. The report names the container record it came from.
  4. If you must convert, convert a copy and compare both files with the image metadata compare tool so you know what the conversion dropped.

Frequently asked questions

Can an MP4 carry C2PA Content Credentials?

Yes. The C2PA specification defines a uuid box for the manifest in ISO base media files, and isGenAI’s C2PA checker validates it.

What does the video metadata viewer show?

Brands, tracks, timescales, durations and raw creation and modification dates read from the headers in your browser, without authenticating them.

Can the AI image detector check an MP4?

Not directly. Extract frames with the video frame extractor and check a frame as an image, or use the C2PA checker on the file.

Is an MP4 detectable after a screen recording?

No. A recording is a new file with no manifest or original headers, and isGenAI does not infer origin from pixels.
