Tom Hanks's AI dental-ad warning: check who authorized an endorsement
A familiar face in an advertisement is not evidence that the person approved the offer. When checking an apparent endorsement, verify the connection between the person, the advertiser and the specific campaign before treating the performance as authorization.
The documented warning
On October 2, 2023, ABC News reported Hanks's Instagram warning that a dental-plan promotion used an AI version of him and that he was not involved. The evidence cited here is his denial as reported contemporaneously by ABC; it does not identify the model or establish the production method independently.

Build an endorsement evidence record
An ad can disappear or change between views. Preserve enough context to explain what you saw without signing up for the advertised offer or submitting personal information.
- Record the ad URL or platform ad identifier, advertiser name, date and full visible claim. Keep a screenshot that includes the advertising context.
- Check the celebrity's established channels for the specific campaign or a warning. A logo, badge or account screenshot inside the ad is not a substitute for visiting the source.
- Compare the advertiser's domain with the organization's established website. Note any mismatch without assuming that every unfamiliar domain is malicious.
- Report the exact ad through the platform's impersonation or misleading-ad process when the evidence supports it. Include the public denial and the ad identifier, rather than only a detector score.
Answer the authorization question first
Do not make a purchase decision depend on whether you can spot lip-sync errors. Even a genuine recording can be reused with a different offer or caption. The useful question is whether this person authorized this promotion.
isGenAI's image tools can inspect a supported still file. They do not verify the voice in an advertisement, the advertiser's identity or a commercial agreement. Retain those as separate questions in your notes.
Questions about this case
Can a screenshot prove a celebrity ad is authorized?
No. It can preserve the wording and appearance of an ad, but authorization needs separate evidence from the person, representative or documented campaign.
