How to cite ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini
APA 7: the APA Style blog now recommends citing the specific chat. The company is the author, the chat title goes in italics followed by [Generative AI chat], then the tool name and the conversation’s share link. When a specific chat would be unhelpful or inappropriate to cite, cite the tool itself with [Large language model]. Source: Citing generative AI in APA Style: Part 1 – Reference formats (APA Style blog, September 2025).
MLA 9: describe what the tool generated, usually your prompt in quotation marks, then give the tool in italics, the model as the version, the company, the date and a shareable link to the conversation (or the tool’s general URL). The AI is never the author. Source: How do I cite generative AI in MLA style? (MLA Style Center, revised August 2025).
Chicago: acknowledge AI-generated text in your sentence or in a note; it generally does not go in the reference list. Check your instructor’s or publisher’s policy before you submit.
Both style guides also ask you to verify any source an AI tool suggests and to cite the original source you actually used. If you need to know whether an image was made with AI before you cite it, check it for AI labels and Content Credentials.

Citation generator questions
How do I cite ChatGPT in APA 7?
Since September 2025 the APA Style blog recommends citing the specific chat: company, date, the chat’s title in italics with [Generative AI chat], the tool name and the share link, for example “OpenAI. (2025, August 21). High school grammar concepts [Generative AI chat]. ChatGPT.” followed by the link. In the text, write (OpenAI, 2025). Choose “Cite an AI tool” above to build one.
How do I cite ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini in MLA 9?
The MLA Style Center (revised August 2025) puts your prompt in quotation marks as the title, followed by the tool in italics, the model, the company, the date and a share link to the conversation, or the tool’s general address when there is none. Do not list the AI as an author. The in-text citation is a shortened prompt, such as (“Describe the theme”).
Which citation styles does this generator support?
APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, Chicago author-date (18th edition), AMA 11th edition and ACS for websites, journal articles and books. The output follows each style’s author, date, title and DOI rules; titles are kept exactly as you type them, so use sentence case for APA and AMA and title case for MLA, Chicago and ACS.
Is my information sent anywhere?
No. Citations are formatted by code running in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or used to look up sources, so double-check the details against the source itself.
How do I cite an isGenAI result in a paper?
Choose “Cite an isGenAI check”, describe what you checked, add the date and the public report link if you created one. The citation names the tool version so readers know which check produced the result. A result describes the evidence found in that file at that time; it is not a verdict on authorship.
