WhatsApp AI image detector: ask for the file, not the photo
A photo sent through WhatsApp’s normal photo path is resized and re-encoded and arrives without its metadata, while a file sent as a document arrives byte for byte, so the only WhatsApp copy worth checking in isGenAI is one sent as a document.

No record in this copy
Screenshots and re-exports often drop records.
A clean copy is not proof of a human author, so the report says what is missing and asks for the original.

WhatsApp offers three ways to send a picture: standard quality, HD quality and “send as document”. Standard and HD sends are re-encoded JPEGs, widely reported to arrive without EXIF or XMP; HD keeps more pixels but is still a re-encode. Sending as a document transfers the original file unchanged, with no inline preview and a 2 GB limit. WhatsApp adds no AI label of its own.
Forwarded images have often been re-encoded several times across chats.
What isGenAI shows for a WhatsApp image
The AI image detector reads the file you upload: a C2PA manifest if one survived, the IPTC DigitalSourceType in XMP, AI statements in metadata, saved prompts in the AUTOMATIC1111, ComfyUI and InvokeAI formats, and matching copies by hash and perceptual fingerprint. A platform copy with none of these returns “no evidence found”, and the report says plainly that absence proves nothing about the author.
A file received as a document can carry everything the sender’s original had: a C2PA manifest, an IPTC source type, a saved prompt. Check it exactly as you would the original.
What to do instead
Reply and ask the sender to resend the picture as a document, or to share the original from their generator or camera roll. Verify with the image SHA-256 checksum tool that the document copy matches the sender’s file if they can provide a hash.
The Telegram and Messenger pages describe the same distinction in other apps.
How to check an image from this platform
- Note the platform’s own label or credential icon on the post before you download anything; it does not travel with the file.
- Ask the poster for the original file, or trace the first upload. A platform download is a re-encoded copy on most services.
- Upload what you have to the AI image detector and read the report. A stripped copy returns “no evidence found” honestly.
- Use the matching-copy check: a hash or perceptual fingerprint match can tie the stripped copy to an original that still carried records.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp remove image metadata?
Normal and HD photo sends are re-encoded and arrive without EXIF or XMP in practice. Sending as a document keeps the original bytes and metadata.
Can isGenAI detect AI in a WhatsApp photo?
A compressed photo usually returns no evidence found. A copy sent as a document can be checked like the original, including any C2PA record or saved prompt.
Does WhatsApp label AI-generated images?
We found no WhatsApp AI label for shared images as of October 2026. Rely on the file and its source, not the chat.
How do I ask for a checkable copy?
Ask the sender to attach the picture as a document rather than a photo. The file then arrives unchanged, up to 2 GB.
