Meta AI image detector: what Meta puts in the file
Meta states that photorealistic images created with Meta AI carry visible markers, invisible watermarks and metadata embedded in the file, and isGenAI reads the IPTC DigitalSourceType declaration from that metadata on an original download.

The file labels itself as AI-made.
IPTC DigitalSourceType such as trainedAlgorithmicMedia is read from XMP and shown with its exact value.

Meta’s announcement describes visible markers, invisible watermarks and metadata embedded within image files for photorealistic Meta AI images, and says Meta reads the C2PA and IPTC “AI generated” indicators to label images from other companies on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. IPTC notes that Meta uses the IPTC DigitalSourceType property for its own generated images.
Meta also states that it is not yet possible to identify all AI-generated content and that people can strip invisible markers. Newer Meta generators may use different marking schemes; inspect the actual file.
What isGenAI shows for a Meta AI image
The XMP DigitalSourceType value trainedAlgorithmicMedia is reported as a declared source type of moderate strength, quoting the field. Any “Imagined with AI” or similar AI statement found in the metadata is listed as a separate declaration. If a C2PA manifest is present, it is validated and shown as a signed record.
isGenAI does not read Meta’s invisible watermark. When the metadata is missing, the report says no file evidence was found.
Downloads from Facebook or Instagram
A Meta AI image posted to Instagram shows an “AI info” label in the app, but the file you save from the feed has been re-encoded and usually carries no metadata. The label lives on the platform, not in the download. Note the label, then ask for the original generation.
The platform pages explain what Instagram, Facebook and Threads strip and add.
How to check an image from this generator
- Get the original download, not a screenshot or a copy saved from a chat or social feed.
- Upload it to the free AI image detector. Files up to 20 MiB in PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF or TIFF are read on the server and are private by default.
- Open “How we checked” and read each finding with its source field: signed record, declared source type, saved prompt, AI statement or matching copy.
- Treat a clean result as “no evidence found”, never as proof that a person made the picture.
Frequently asked questions
Does Meta AI add metadata to generated images?
Yes. Meta documents visible markers, invisible watermarks and embedded metadata on photorealistic Meta AI images, and IPTC notes Meta uses the DigitalSourceType property, as of October 2026.
Can isGenAI read Meta’s invisible watermark?
No. isGenAI reads the file’s metadata and signed records, not pixel watermarks. It reports the IPTC source type and any AI statement it finds.
Is a Meta AI image detectable after a screenshot?
Not from the file. Screenshots carry no XMP or IPTC. isGenAI reports no evidence found and suggests obtaining the original image.
Why does an Instagram download show nothing although the post was labelled?
Instagram labels content in the app from signals it read at upload, then serves a re-encoded copy without metadata. The label does not travel with the downloaded file.
