AI image detector by generator

Midjourney AI image detector: what the file reveals

A Midjourney download can be identified from its own metadata: the IPTC lists Midjourney among generators that mark images with the DigitalSourceType value trainedAlgorithmicMedia, and isGenAI reads that declaration directly from the file.

AI source type declared

The file labels itself as AI-made.

IPTC DigitalSourceType such as trainedAlgorithmicMedia is read from XMP and shown with its exact value.

What Midjourney writes into a downloaded image

Midjourney committed in 2023 to the IPTC approach for synthetic media, and IPTC’s guidance names it among generators that set DigitalSourceType to trainedAlgorithmicMedia. Third-party inspections also report the prompt and job identifier in the XMP description field of files downloaded from the Midjourney website. Images taken from Discord previews or re-saved from the web app’s thumbnails are a different story: a thumbnail is a re-encoded copy and usually carries none of this.

As of October 2026 we found no Midjourney documentation of C2PA Content Credentials. So the strongest evidence in a Midjourney file is a declared source type in XMP, which is editable text rather than a signed record. isGenAI shows it as exactly that: a declaration, with its strength marked as moderate.

What isGenAI shows for a Midjourney file

Upload the original and the report lists the XMP DigitalSourceType finding under “How we checked”, quoting the field it came from. If an AI statement such as “AI generated” appears in the description, it is listed as a separate declaration. The checker also computes a hash and a perceptual fingerprint and reports any matching copy already in its records.

isGenAI does not guess from the look of the pixels. A Midjourney render that was screenshotted, cropped or passed through a messaging app will usually return “no evidence found”, and the report says so plainly instead of inventing a verdict.

What survives a screenshot or a repost

Nothing in XMP survives a screenshot, because a screenshot is a brand-new image. Instagram, X, WhatsApp and most feeds re-encode uploads and drop XMP and IPTC, so a Midjourney image saved from a feed is normally stripped. The practical move is to ask the poster for the original file, or to find the first publication and download from there.

If you only have a stripped copy, use the matching-copy check: a hash or fingerprint match against a record that still carried the declaration is evidence you can retrace.

How to check an image from this generator

  1. Get the original download, not a screenshot or a copy saved from a chat or social feed.
  2. Upload it to the free AI image detector. Files up to 20 MiB in PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF or TIFF are read on the server and are private by default.
  3. Open “How we checked” and read each finding with its source field: signed record, declared source type, saved prompt, AI statement or matching copy.
  4. Treat a clean result as “no evidence found”, never as proof that a person made the picture.

Frequently asked questions

Does Midjourney add metadata to its images?

Yes. IPTC’s guidance lists Midjourney among generators that mark images with DigitalSourceType trainedAlgorithmicMedia, and third-party inspections report the prompt in the XMP description of website downloads. As of October 2026 we found no Midjourney documentation of signed C2PA Content Credentials.

Is a Midjourney image detectable after a screenshot?

Not from metadata. A screenshot is a new image with none of Midjourney’s XMP or IPTC fields. isGenAI reports no evidence found rather than guessing; the fix is to obtain the original download.

Can isGenAI read the Midjourney prompt from the file?

isGenAI reads AI statements found in the metadata and shows the quoted snippet. The saved-prompt reader is built for AUTOMATIC1111, ComfyUI and InvokeAI records, so a Midjourney description is reported as a declaration, not as a structured prompt.

Does Midjourney use C2PA Content Credentials?

We found no vendor documentation of C2PA in Midjourney downloads as of October 2026. If a file does carry a manifest, the checker validates it like any other; if not, the declared IPTC source type is the strongest available signal.
