Katy Perry's 2024 Met Gala AI images: verify attendance before the outfit
A convincing red-carpet image can make the wrong question feel obvious: what was the person wearing? First establish whether they were at that event. The date, venue and source of the photograph form a more useful starting point than judging the dress alone.
The 2024 example
NPR's May 7 reporting reproduced Perry's own Instagram response to AI images depicting her at the previous evening's Met Gala. She said she had been working and could not attend; her post also showed that her mother had believed one of the images. The cited report preserves the public response alongside the pictures it addressed.
Verify a red-carpet photograph
Treat the claimed attendance and the image's production as related but separate questions. A person might attend an event while a particular picture of them is still fabricated.
- Write down the claimed event, year and location. Check whether the caption was added by the photographer, the person pictured or a reposting account.
- Look for the person's own dated account of that evening and attributable event coverage. Compare the same year rather than borrowing confirmation from an earlier appearance.
- Find the credited photo source and independent views of the arrival. Ten copies of one picture provide one image source, not ten witnesses.
- If the image remains unverified, keep that status explicit. A personal denial of attendance can address the event claim without identifying the exact image-generation software.
Record useful clues without overreading them
Venue signage, arrival sequences and photo captions can guide a search. An unfamiliar dress or unusual shadow is a reason to investigate, not a reliable verdict by itself. Cropping may also hide the part of a caption that originally disclosed AI use.
When an original file is available, inspect its saved records before making an edited copy. A downloaded social image may have little metadata. That absence neither confirms attendance nor proves the picture was generated.
Questions about this case
Is a missing photographer credit proof that a red-carpet picture is AI?
No. It is a missing source detail. Try to recover the credit and original publication; if you cannot, describe the source as unresolved rather than treating the omission as a technical verdict.
