What the NovelAI reader shows
- Prompt. The text NovelAI stored, including V4 captions when the image has a single one.
- Undesired content. NovelAI’s negative prompt, when it was saved.
- Settings. Seed, steps, sampler, noise schedule, scale (CFG), width, height and image-to-image strength when present.
How to read NovelAI metadata
- Download the image from NovelAI as a PNG and keep that original file.
- Upload it above. The reader checks the PNG’s Software and Comment records.
- Copy the prompt and settings, or note that the copy carries no record.

Questions about NovelAI image metadata
Where does NovelAI store the prompt in an image?
In the original PNG download, NovelAI writes a Software text record set to “NovelAI” and a Comment record holding JSON with the prompt, the undesired content (negative prompt), seed, steps, sampler, scale and size. Newer V4 images also store the prompt as a caption inside that JSON.
Is NovelAI data stored in EXIF?
Not in classic EXIF tags. It sits in PNG text chunks (Software and Comment), which many EXIF viewers do not show. This reader parses those chunks directly.
Why is no prompt found in my NovelAI image?
Screenshots, JPEG conversions and most social uploads drop the PNG text chunks, so use the original PNG from NovelAI. Images with several character captions hold more than one prompt, and the reader does not pick one for you. The alpha-channel stealth copy that some NovelAI images carry is not decoded.
Is my image private?
Yes. Files are checked privately by default, no account is needed, and no public page is created.
