Convert AVIF to JPG

Saved an .avif from a website and your editor or upload form will not open it? Turn it into a JPG that works everywhere. Your browser does the decoding on your device; nothing is uploaded.

Your images never leave this browser. No upload, no server, no AI model call: just instant local processing.

Selected files: 0 · PNG, JPEG and WebP · up to 8 MB per file and 12 million pixels · 40 MB per batch. Animated files export as one clean still.

Your export is a fresh, clean file: no saved prompts, EXIF or Content Credentials ride along. Keep the original when you need its creation records.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

Pick an AVIF up to 8 MB and 12 million pixels, or try the example, then select Run tool. This page uses your browser's own AVIF decoder, which current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari include; a much older browser will report that the file cannot be decoded. The pixels are encoded as a JPG at quality 90 with the same width and height.

Check the preview, then download. AVIF can be transparent and JPG cannot, so transparent areas become white. Expect the JPG to be larger than the AVIF: AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats, which is why sites use it, while JPG trades size for compatibility. An animated AVIF exports its first displayed frame as one still image. High dynamic range AVIF files are converted the way your browser displays them, as a standard JPG. The JPG is a fresh export and does not copy the AVIF's metadata.

  1. Pick a .avif file from your device, or select Try an example.
  2. Select Run tool. Your browser decodes the AVIF and encodes a JPG at quality 90 on a white background.
  3. Check the preview and the bytes, then download your JPG.

Your questions, answered

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec, published by the Alliance for Open Media. It stores photos in much smaller files than JPG at similar quality and supports transparency and HDR, so many websites now serve it.

How do I open an AVIF file?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display AVIF directly, so you can drag the file into a browser tab. To use it in an app that does not support AVIF, convert it to JPG or PNG on this page.

Why does this page say my AVIF cannot be decoded?

The conversion relies on your browser's built-in AVIF support. Update the browser, or try another current browser. A damaged file or one larger than 12 million pixels is also rejected.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG instead?

Yes. Use the convert image to PNG page, which accepts AVIF and keeps transparency, or the full image format converter for PNG, JPEG or WebP output.
