How to convert JFIF to JPG

Pick the .jfif file, up to 8 MB, or try the example, and select Run tool. JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format: a .jfif file is already a JPEG image, and the extension is what usually causes trouble, because some apps and forms only accept names ending in .jpg. This page decodes the image and saves it as a .jpg at quality 95 with the same width and height.

Download the JPG and use it anywhere. Re-saving at quality 95 keeps the picture visually identical; if you prefer to keep the exact original bytes, you can simply rename the file from .jfif to .jpg on a computer, which works because the data inside is the same kind of JPEG. Windows often saves web images as .jfif because of a file-type setting, which is why the extension shows up after downloads. The new JPG is a fresh export without the original's metadata.

  1. Pick a .jfif file from your device, or select Try an example.
  2. Select Run tool. The page decodes the JPEG data and saves a .jpg at quality 95.
  3. Check the preview, then download your JPG.

Your questions, answered

What is a JFIF file?

JFIF is the JPEG File Interchange Format, the standard wrapper used by most JPEG images. A .jfif file is a JPEG photo with a less common extension, so it holds the same kind of data as a .jpg.

Can I just rename .jfif to .jpg?

Usually yes. Because the data is already JPEG, changing the extension to .jpg makes most apps open it. Use this page when you cannot rename files easily, for example on a phone, or want a clean re-saved copy.

Why do my downloads save as JFIF?

On Windows, a registry setting for the JPEG file type sometimes maps image/jpeg downloads to the .jfif extension. The image itself is a normal JPEG; only the name differs.

Does converting JFIF to JPG reduce quality?

This page re-encodes at quality 95, which is visually indistinguishable for photos. Renaming the file instead keeps every byte. Either way the dimensions stay exactly the same.
