How to convert a JPG into a PNG

Download the PNG once the preview looks right. Expect a larger file: JPG throws away detail to stay small, while PNG stores each decoded pixel losslessly. Converting cannot bring back detail the JPG already lost, and it does not make the background transparent, because a JPG has no transparency to keep. What you gain is a file that will not lose any more quality when you edit and save it again. The PNG is a fresh export, so the photo's EXIF records such as camera model and GPS position are not copied into it.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG keeps exactly the pixels the JPG decodes to, compression artifacts included. It stops further loss, because PNG is lossless, but it cannot restore detail the JPG already discarded.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. To make one flat color transparent, such as a white background, use the make a color transparent tool after converting.
