How to convert a JPG to ICO
Pick a JPG up to 8 MB, ideally a square logo or a tightly cropped photo, or try the example, and select Run tool. The converter scales your image into three square icons of 16 × 16, 32 × 32 and 48 × 48 pixels without cropping, and stores all three as PNG-compressed entries inside one ICO file. A wide or tall picture is centered with transparent space above and below or at the sides.
Preview the 48-pixel icon, then download favicon.ico. Use it as a website favicon at your site root, or as a custom icon for a Windows shortcut or folder. A JPG has no transparency, so the picture keeps its own background color inside the icon. Detailed photos turn into a few colored pixels at 16 pixels, so bold, simple artwork works best; crop the subject first with the image cropper if needed. Need a transparent icon? Start from a PNG with a transparent background instead.
- Pick a .jpg file from your device, or select Try an example.
- Select Run tool. The page fits the image into 16, 32 and 48 pixel squares and builds one ICO file.
- Review the preview and output bytes, then download favicon.ico.
Your questions, answered
How do I convert a JPG to an ICO file?
Pick the JPG on this page and select Run tool. Your browser builds one .ico file containing 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions of the image, ready to download. No upload, no account.
What is an ICO file?
ICO is the Windows icon format. One .ico file can hold several sizes of the same icon, which is why browsers use favicon.ico for site icons and Windows uses .ico files for shortcuts and folders.
Will my JPG icon have a transparent background?
Only around the picture when it is not square. JPG has no transparency, so the image's own background stays inside the icon. Use a PNG with a transparent background for a cut-out icon.
What size should the JPG be for an icon?
Start with a square image of at least 256 × 256 pixels with a simple, bold design. The converter scales it down to 16, 32 and 48 pixels, where fine detail and small text disappear.
