Civitai metadata: where the prompt lives and what a saved copy keeps

Civitai reads the generation data embedded in an uploaded image, such as the prompt, seed and resources, and shows it on the image page, but that data is present only when the uploader’s file carried it, and Civitai documents nothing about whether a copy saved from the page keeps it.

Saved prompt found

The generator wrote its settings into the file.

Prompt, negative prompt, seed, sampler and model are read word for word, with the field they came from.

What Civitai strips and adds

Civitai’s education hub says the site detects resources in an uploaded image’s metadata and offers the uploader the chance to review them, and its FAQ says most images on the site include a readable prompt and metadata. Civitai’s developer reference describes a free-form “meta” object on each image, with keys such as the prompt, seed and Civitai resources, and states that it is present only when the uploader included metadata at post time. Images made in Civitai’s own generator are linked to the resources used.

We found no Civitai documentation, as of October 2026, of whether the file served on an image page is the original upload or a resized, re-encoded copy, or of C2PA Content Credentials on images generated or hosted there. Treat a copy saved from the page as possibly stripped until the file proves otherwise, and treat the on-page generation data as the uploader’s record, not a verified one.

What isGenAI shows for a Civitai image

The AI image detector reads the file you upload: a C2PA manifest if one survived, the IPTC DigitalSourceType in XMP, AI statements in metadata, saved prompts in the AUTOMATIC1111, ComfyUI and InvokeAI formats, and matching copies by hash and perceptual fingerprint. A platform copy with none of these returns “no evidence found”, and the report says plainly that absence proves nothing about the author.

If the saved file still holds an AUTOMATIC1111 “parameters” chunk, a ComfyUI workflow, InvokeAI or NovelAI data, the report shows the prompt and settings, which you can compare with the generation data panel on the Civitai page.

What to do instead

Copy the generation data from the Civitai image page together with the page URL; it is the platform’s record of what the uploader’s file contained. When the file you saved has no prompt, ask the creator for the original PNG export from their generator.

Remember that generation data can be edited before upload or removed by the tools that saved the file. A prompt shows how an image was described, not who made it.

How to check an image from this platform

  1. Note the platform’s own label or credential icon on the post before you download anything; it does not travel with the file.
  2. Ask the poster for the original file, or trace the first upload. A platform download is a re-encoded copy on most services.
  3. Upload what you have to the AI image detector and read the report. A stripped copy returns “no evidence found” honestly.
  4. Use the matching-copy check: a hash or perceptual fingerprint match can tie the stripped copy to an original that still carried records.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Civitai get the prompt it shows?

From the metadata in the uploaded file or from Civitai’s own generator. Civitai’s developer reference says the meta object is present only when the uploader included metadata at post time.

Why is an image on Civitai missing generation data?

The uploaded file did not carry readable generation data, for example because the save node or an editing step dropped it. Civitai can only show what the file contained.

Does an image saved from Civitai keep the prompt?

Civitai does not document it. Upload the saved copy to isGenAI: if a supported prompt chunk survived, the report shows it; if not, use the page’s generation data and the creator’s original.

Do Civitai images carry Content Credentials?

We found no Civitai documentation of C2PA Content Credentials on generated or hosted images as of October 2026.
