DeviantArt AI check: the “Created using AI tools” label and the file

DeviantArt shows a “Created using AI tools” label when the artist selects it on the submit page or when the uploaded image’s metadata indicates AI, so the label records what DeviantArt read at upload and the downloaded file must be checked on its own.

What DeviantArt strips and adds

DeviantArt announced in June 2023 a required setting on the submit page to say whether a work was created using AI tools, after which the label “Created using AI tools” appears on the deviation. A July 2023 update added that the label is applied automatically when an image’s metadata indicates AI. DeviantArt’s current Terms of Service require the label for AI content offered for sale and recommend it otherwise, and mark works with “noai” and “noimageai” directives when the creator has not authorised AI use. Images from DeviantArt’s DreamUp generator are, as widely reported, labelled and tagged automatically.

We found no DeviantArt documentation, as of October 2026, of what metadata survives in the image it displays or in the file offered by the download button, or of C2PA support. As widely reported, the displayed image is a resized copy, and the download button, when the artist enables it, gives a larger file closer to the upload.

What isGenAI shows for a DeviantArt image

The AI image detector reads the file you upload: a C2PA manifest if one survived, the IPTC DigitalSourceType in XMP, AI statements in metadata, saved prompts in the AUTOMATIC1111, ComfyUI and InvokeAI formats, and matching copies by hash and perceptual fingerprint. A platform copy with none of these returns “no evidence found”, and the report says plainly that absence proves nothing about the author.

A “noai” directive is an opt-out signal for AI training, not a statement about how the image was made; isGenAI does not treat it as evidence either way.

What to do instead

Record the label on the deviation and the page URL. Use the download button when the artist offers it rather than saving the preview, then check that file. If downloads are off, ask the artist for the original export.

An unlabelled deviation is not verified as hand-made: the label depends on the artist’s answer or on metadata that survived to upload.

How to check an image from this platform

  1. Note the platform’s own label or credential icon on the post before you download anything; it does not travel with the file.
  2. Ask the poster for the original file, or trace the first upload. A platform download is a re-encoded copy on most services.
  3. Upload what you have to the AI image detector and read the report. A stripped copy returns “no evidence found” honestly.
  4. Use the matching-copy check: a hash or perceptual fingerprint match can tie the stripped copy to an original that still carried records.

Frequently asked questions

What does “Created using AI tools” mean on DeviantArt?

The artist selected it on the submit page, or DeviantArt applied it because the image’s metadata indicated AI, per DeviantArt’s 2023 announcement and update.

Is the AI label mandatory on DeviantArt?

The 2023 announcement made it a required setting at submission. The current Terms of Service require it for AI content offered for sale and recommend it otherwise.

Does a DeviantArt download keep metadata?

DeviantArt does not document it. Use the download button when available and upload the file to isGenAI to see which records survived.

What is the “noai” tag on DeviantArt?

A directive in DeviantArt’s terms telling others the work is not authorised for AI datasets. It says nothing about whether the work itself was made with AI.
