isGenAI vs Was It AI: which image checker to use
Was It AI compares an image’s patterns with real and AI examples and gives a confidence score, with a few guest checks and a free account of 10 images a month. isGenAI reads the evidence saved inside the file (C2PA Content Credentials, IPTC labels, saved prompts) and shows where each finding came from, free and without an account.

isGenAI and Was It AI compared
| Question | isGenAI | Was It AI |
|---|---|---|
| Free use | Free web checker and free browser tools; no paid tier is needed to check a file. | A limited number of guest checks; the free account includes 10 images a month. (source) |
| Sign-up | None. No account, no email. | Not needed for the guest checks; needed for the monthly free allowance and the extension. (source) |
| Paid plans | None needed. | From $3.99 a month for 100 images, up to $300 a month for 10,000. (source) |
| Method | Reads records saved in the file: C2PA Content Credentials, the IPTC digital source type, prompts saved by AUTOMATIC1111, ComfyUI, InvokeAI or NovelAI, and EXIF or generator metadata. It never scores how the pixels look. | Analyses patterns in the image against a database of real and AI images; no metadata method is described. (source) |
| Result | Named findings, each with the field it came from, or “no AI evidence found” (which means no record in that copy, not proof of a camera). | A confidence score and a report. (source) |
| File limits | PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF up to 20 MiB plus single-page TIFF; the C2PA checker also reads HEIC/HEIF, PDF, MP4 and MOV up to 25 MiB. | Images up to 8 MB and 10,000 × 10,000 pixels, by upload or image URL. (source) |
| API and extension | POST /v1/check with a file, URL, text or code. No API key for the documented endpoints. Chrome extension available. | API access on every plan, including free; browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Firefox. (source) |
| Privacy | Private by default: private checks stay out of public reports, and the C2PA checker processes uploads in memory without storing them. | Images are not stored beyond the analysis or used for training without consent; logs are deleted after 90 days. (source) |
When to use which
Choose Was It AI when
- The image has no saved records and you want a confidence score anyway.
- You want a right-click check inside Firefox, Edge, Brave or Opera.
- You only need a handful of checks a month and are happy to create an account.
Choose isGenAI when
- You want to see the record itself: a signed C2PA manifest, an IPTC “trained algorithmic media” label or a saved prompt.
- You do not want to count checks or sign in.
- You also check writing, code or public links in the same place.

Content Credentials found
A signed manifest describes how the file was made.
Signer, recording tool, actions and the signature check result are reported separately, so you can weigh each one.

- Get the original file, ideally the download from the generator or the sender, not a screenshot or a copy re-saved by a social app.
- Open the free AI image detector at isgenai.com/ai-image-detector and upload the file. No account is needed.
- Read each finding with the field it came from: a C2PA manifest, an IPTC digital source type, a saved prompt or generator metadata.
- If the report says no AI evidence was found, treat that as “no record in this copy”, then look for the original source or run a pixel-based classifier if you need a probability.
Questions
Is there a free Was It AI alternative?
isGenAI is free and needs no account. It reads the records saved in an image rather than estimating from patterns, so it is strongest on original downloads from generators and cameras that write Content Credentials.
Why might the two tools disagree?
Was It AI estimates from the picture; isGenAI reports what the file records. A screenshot of an AI image has no records, so isGenAI finds nothing while a classifier may still score it. A signed camera photo shows its record in isGenAI whatever a score says.
Does isGenAI have a browser extension?
Yes, a Chrome extension. Was It AI lists extensions for more browsers, including Firefox, Edge, Brave and Opera, as of October 2026.
Is isGenAI affiliated with Was It AI?
No. isGenAI is independent and not affiliated with Was It AI. Facts on this page come from wasitai.com as of October 2026.
