isGenAI vs AI or Not: free AI checker alternative
AI or Not is a classifier service: it returns an AI-or-human verdict with a confidence for images, video, audio, text and deepfakes, through a free account with monthly credits or an API. isGenAI answers a narrower question with evidence: it reads the C2PA Content Credentials, IPTC AI labels and saved prompts inside an image, with no account and no score.

isGenAI and AI or Not compared
| Question | isGenAI | AI or Not |
|---|---|---|
| Free use | Free web checker and free browser tools; no paid tier is needed to check a file. | Free plan with starting credits; its monthly limits include 20 AI image checks. (source) |
| Sign-up | None. No account, no email. | The free plan is an account (“Start Free”); API keys come from the dashboard after sign-up. (source) |
| Paid plans | None needed. | Pro from $5 a month for monthly credits; Business $100 a month; Enterprise custom. (source) |
| Method | Reads records saved in the file: C2PA Content Credentials, the IPTC digital source type, prompts saved by AUTOMATIC1111, ComfyUI, InvokeAI or NovelAI, and EXIF or generator metadata. It never scores how the pixels look. | Detectors trained for diffusion, GAN and transformer models, returning a verdict (ai, human or unknown) with a confidence and per-generator predictions. (source) |
| Media covered | Images (records), text and code (declared use); C2PA records in video and PDF files. | Images, video, audio (voice and music), text and deepfakes. (source) |
| Image formats | PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF up to 20 MiB plus single-page TIFF; the C2PA checker also reads HEIC/HEIF, PDF, MP4 and MOV up to 25 MiB. | API image formats include JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and TIFF. (source) |
| API | POST /v1/check with a file, URL, text or code. No API key for the documented endpoints. | REST API with a bearer API key; rate limits depend on the plan. (source) |
| Upload retention | Private by default: private checks stay out of public reports, and the C2PA checker processes uploads in memory without storing them. | Its API docs say media is deleted right after inference. (source) |
When to use which
Choose AI or Not when
- You need a verdict on audio, voice or video content, which isGenAI does not score.
- Your image has no saved records (a screenshot or a re-uploaded copy) and you want a classifier’s confidence anyway.
- You want deepfake face analysis or per-generator predictions from one paid API.
Choose isGenAI when
- You want to point to the record that proves a claim, such as a signed C2PA manifest or a saved Stable Diffusion prompt.
- You do not want to create an account or manage credits.
- You need a free API call without a key, for example in a quick script or a no-code automation.

Content Credentials found
A signed manifest describes how the file was made.
Signer, recording tool, actions and the signature check result are reported separately, so you can weigh each one.

- Get the original file, ideally the download from the generator or the sender, not a screenshot or a copy re-saved by a social app.
- Open the free AI image detector at isgenai.com/ai-image-detector and upload the file. No account is needed.
- Read each finding with the field it came from: a C2PA manifest, an IPTC digital source type, a saved prompt or generator metadata.
- If the report says no AI evidence was found, treat that as “no record in this copy”, then look for the original source or run a pixel-based classifier if you need a probability.
Questions
Is isGenAI a free alternative to AI or Not?
For images that carry records, yes: isGenAI is free with no account and shows the C2PA, IPTC or saved-prompt evidence behind each finding. It is not a replacement for AI or Not’s audio, video or deepfake scoring, which isGenAI does not offer.
Why does isGenAI not give a confidence score?
Because a score estimates how pixels look, while isGenAI reports what the file records. A record names its source, so you can check it; when there is no record, isGenAI says so rather than guessing.
Can I use both?
Yes. A common workflow is to read the file’s records with isGenAI first, then use a classifier as a second opinion for files that carry no records.
Is isGenAI affiliated with AI or Not?
No. isGenAI is independent and has no relationship with AI or Not or AIorNot, Inc. The facts on this page come from AI or Not’s own pages as of October 2026.
