Turn a video moment into a PNG.
Use the video frame extractor to save a picture at a chosen playback time. For a quick overview, make a contact sheet with labeled sample positions and a downloadable timestamp record. Your original stays unchanged.
Your selected video stays on this device. It is not uploaded.
Up to 200 MiB · Up to 10 minutes · 12 million pixels per frame · Maximum side 8,192 pixels. MP4 and WebM are common choices; support depends on your browser and the file’s codec.
The example is a three-second pattern drawn by software, with no people or camera footage. It tests extraction, not AI detection.
From a local video to a reviewable image
- Open a video. Choose a file you are allowed to inspect. Check the decoded dimensions and duration. If the codec is unsupported, use a compatible export from your own video editor.
- Choose a moment. Enter seconds or a minutes:seconds timestamp, or pause the preview and use its position. Extract a PNG at the decoded size, then inspect the result.
- Keep the context. Download the PNG and its timestamp manifest. For a contact sheet, use the numbered samples to return to those parts of the original video. A few stills do not represent the full sequence or its audio.
A useful contact-sheet example
For a 60-second video, six samples request 5, 15, 25, 35, 45 and 55 seconds. This gives evenly spaced points without requesting the exact end of the file. If an event happens between those points, enter its timestamp separately. The sheet is an overview, not a list of every scene.
Video frame extraction questions
How do I extract an image from a video?
Choose a local video, enter a timestamp such as 12.5 seconds, and select Preview and extract PNG. Review the returned image and download it. Single-frame exports use the browser-decoded width and height. You can also pause the video preview and use its current position.
Which video files can I use?
Use a complete video your browser can decode. MP4 and WebM are common options, but their codecs and your device determine support; an extension alone is not enough. Files must be at most 200 MiB (209,715,200 bytes), no longer than 10 minutes, and at most 12 million decoded pixels per frame, with no side above 8,192 pixels. Audio-only files, live streams and protected video are not supported.
Is this frame-exact extraction?
No. The tool asks the browser to seek to a playback time, then draws its decoded video image. Seeking and reported playback positions can be approximate. The manifest records the requested seconds and browser-reported position, not an exact frame number, presentation timestamp or frame rate. Adjacent requests may produce the same frame.
What does the contact sheet contain?
Choose 6, 9 or 12 samples. The tool divides the duration into equal intervals and samples each midpoint, then puts the images in a three-column PNG grid. Each thumbnail fits inside 320 by 180 pixels without cropping or upscaling. Captions show requested times; the downloadable JSON records requested and browser-reported positions. It does not extract every frame or identify scene changes.
Does my video leave this device?
No. The selected file is opened through a local browser object URL and decoded on your device. Video bytes are not uploaded by this tool. PNG and JSON downloads are created locally; their names and manifest omit the original filename. Ordinary page resources still load normally.
Does a frame show whether the video is AI-generated?
No. This tool extracts browser-decoded pictures; it performs no AI, deepfake or audio classification. An exported PNG does not retain the original video's audio, metadata or provenance records. Keep the source video and context for any wider review. Browser decoding and color handling can also affect exported appearance.
Use the frame for the next step
- Inspect supported MP4/MOV container metadata
- Crop a detail from the exported PNG
- Compare two equally sized extracted images
- Understand what a single video frame can and cannot establish
