Convert an Image to Grayscale
Create a grayscale PNG with weighted red, green and blue values while keeping transparency.
Your selected images stay in this browser. No AI model call or server upload.
Selected files: 0 · PNG, JPEG and WebP. Up to 8 MB per file and 12 million decoded pixels. Batch totals cannot exceed 40 MB. Exports are still images; animation is not retained.
Exported images do not carry the original saved prompts, EXIF or Content Credentials. Keep the original file when you need its creation records.
Each pixel receives the same red, green and blue value using 0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B in the decoded display values. This is a grayscale effect, not a color-managed print conversion.
How to use this tool
- Choose the color image you want to make grayscale.
- Run the tool; no amount or threshold setting is needed.
- Review the grayscale preview and download the PNG. Transparent pixels retain their alpha values.
Frequently asked questions
Is grayscale the same as a black-and-white threshold?
No. Grayscale retains intermediate gray tones. A threshold would force pixels to pure black or white. This tool creates a grayscale image and does not offer a threshold setting.
Will a transparent PNG remain transparent in grayscale?
Yes. The red, green and blue channels change while each pixel's alpha value remains unchanged. The output is PNG, which supports that transparency.
